Google Warns Against Sneaky Redirects in Updated Guidelines –

Google is warning webmasters about the perils of utilizing redirects that Google views as manipulative with the intent of deceiving searchers. This type of redirect is also well-known as cloaking, although the term “sneaky redirect” is a better description, especially for newer webmasters who might not know the cloaking terminology.

Along with the warning, Google has updated their webmaster quality guidelines to also include specifics on the types of redirects that they consider sneaky and manipulative.


However, some redirects deceive search engines or display content to human users that is different than that made available to crawlers. It’s a violation of Google Webmaster Guidelines to redirect a user to a different page with the intent to display content other than what was made available to the search engine crawler. When a redirect is implemented in this way, a search engine might index the original page rather than follow the redirect, while users are taken to the redirect target. Like cloaking, this practice is deceptive because it attempts to display different content to users and to Googlebot, and can take a visitor somewhere other than where they expected to go.


It’s been a common trick for spammers, especially in years gone by, to serve up one version of the page for Googlebot and another version of the page to users, whether they are providing better content to Googlebot, or serving a page that is completely different – right down to a completely different topic – to users.

While Google has been able to catch bait-and-switch redirects for quite some time, it appears they are also cracking down on webmasters who are serving different pages based on things like one page to desktop users and another completely different one to mobile users.


Some examples of sneaky redirects include:

Search engines shown one type of content while users are redirected to something significantly different.

Desktop users receive a normal page, while mobile users are redirected to a completely different spam domain.


Google is also warning about hacked sites that might redirect users to other pages or sites, specifically citing examples where the user coming from a Google search gets redirected while someone to goes to the site directly, such as through a bookmark or by typing the address into the address bar, goes to the proper site or page. Or hackers base it upon things like particular user agent, referral, or device.

Google pointed out that there are reasons use redirects that are completely legitimate. This includes things like redirecting from one URL to another in the case of a website moving to a different domain. They also have a using JavaScript to redirect, such as redirecting the user when they log into a website, is perfectly fine – but again as long as it isn’t manipulating the end user.

National Digital Marketing Company Discusses Three Things We Can Expect From Upcoming … –

On August 30th, 2013, Google started using its new search algorithm “Hummingbird”. They waited until September 26th to unveil this change as public knowledge. Though previous algorithm updates have been shown to have affected “2 to 5 percent” of all search queries, the impact for Hummingbird could be significantly more substantial. According to an entrepreneur.com article entitled “Is Your SEO Strategy Ready for Google’s New Algorithm”, Hummingbird is believed to have affected almost 90 percent of the searches in Google.

Google derives its search results from a propriety algorithm engineered by its team with literally hundreds of components and factors. The algorithms themselves are named after benign animals, such as Panda, Penguin, and Hummingbird. Google releases new algorithms and improves upon them when they’re out in order to attempt to give users the most accurate and useful results for what they are searching.

Algorithm updates typically alter some of the search positions of nearly every website online. “Some of these alterations can’t be prevented, but some can be anticipated,” said Ryan Klein, Managing Partner for Market My Market.

According to Market My Market, techniques in the realm of SEO have changed dramatically in the past two years. Over the next few months, Google will continue to make tweaks to the Hummingbird algorithm. Here is more of what we should expect to see:

Pivoting of Google+

According to a New York Times post a week ago, Vic Gundotra who was known as the mind behind Google + departed after heading Google + as the Senior Vice President of Social. He was the driving force pushing the Google+ platform. Previously anyone who was using a Google product was forced to have a Google + account. For example if you wanted to make a comment on a video on YouTube, you had to comment using your Google + account. Chase Williams, Managing Partner at Market My Market commented, “I believe Google + will most likely pivot into a platform, rather than a product. This way the struggling social media tool is no longer competing with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.”

Link Building is Getting Even Trickier

Link Building, a core component of SEO that builds authority to a website based on the number, diversification, and quality of links directed to it, is getting tougher. “We are seeing some interesting trends here, and they aren’t easy,” Ryan Klein says. “I’ve always loved the idea of link bait through creative and meaningful content, but it is hard to rely on that. It is completely contingent on people sharing your content. What if you’re an engineer, or a probate lawyer?”

“We’ve experimented with microsites and buying links. Of course we would never trust a vendor with a client without trying it ourselves. We’ve worked with industry leaders here with the most reliable places, and tried it out. Keywords jump up 10 spots for about 3 days and then drop back down. It’s a tough game here. I think the best bet here is focusing on a handful of really high quality links, and getting creative with how you can obtain them. You’d be surprised how often you only get these links with totally legitimate means.”

Getting More Local

Google Local, or interchangeably Google Places, has seen major revamping in the past 3 months. With the increasingly intrusive presence of Google+, Google links for setting up your business can be “confusing as heck” at times, according to Klein. “If you have a storefront, you’re going to want to ensure your Local/Places account is set up completely right. This is a great opportunity for exposure you don’t want to miss,” Klein says. Even though the merging of Google Local/Places/Google+ pages have been tough to navigate, he believes they are sorting out and should be solidified in the near future if they weren’t already done.

Yelp Reports Q1 2014 Net Revenue At $76.4 Million, A 66% Growth Over Last Year’s Q1 Earnings – Growth Rate

According to Yelp’s Q1 2014 earnings report, the company’s net revenue for the quarter totaled $76.4 million, representing a 66 percent growth over first quarter of last year.

Yelp claims average monthly unique visitors climbed to 132 million, representing 30 percent year-over-year growth, and local business accounts reached 74,000, a 65 percent year-over-year growth rate.

Monthly mobile unique visitors was up even more with 52 percent year-over-year growth reaching 61 million. Yelp claims 35 percent of its new reviews for the quarter were submitted via a mobile device.

“In the first quarter we announced our integration into Yahoo local search, building on our existing partnerships with Apple Maps and Bing,” said Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman, “We also entered into an advertising partnership with YP. com which will enable us to introduce Yelp to an even broader pool of business owners.”

CFO Rob Krolik followed up Stoppelman’s comment to say the local search company will continue investing in hiring, geographic expansion and product innovation.

Internationally, Yelp said it is now available in 120 markets worldwide, launching in Mexico and Japan, and adding new markets in Quebec City, Canada, and Lisbon. Yelp’s international traffic saw a 95 percent year-over-year growth rate, with international reviews growing 210 percent during first quarter of 2014.

Yelp says it expects full year growth rate for 2014 to be 57 percent compared to last year, with net revenue in the range of $363 million and $367 million.
