Male and female Pomeranians are similar in size. Their extremely dense fur consists of two separate layers and is known as a double coat. Coat colors vary widely, but red and orange fur are particularly common. Poms are spitz dogs, kin to bigger dogs such as Norwegian elkhounds, Samoyeds and Alaskan malamutes. Longevity is a strong suit for many Pomeranians, and their typical life spans are between roughly 15 and 18 years. Curiosity Curious behavior is common in Pomeranians, and the clever little guys enjoy observing and learning new things. They are quick to take in new information. Pomeranians are chock full of energy and are almost always up for excitement, exploration and play. Mellow and low-key dogs they are not. Barking Excessive barking behaviors sometimes are common in Pomeranians. If you own a Pom and notice that his barking seems to lack intent or purpose, act swiftly in deterring the behavior. Since Pomeranians are usually responsive to training, you should be able to make fast progress in nipping the immoderate barking in the bud. Pomeranians are innately protective dogs who often bark when anything seems amiss or when something unfamiliar is around. With Other Dogs When it comes to meetings with fellow dogs, Pomeranians can be a little sassy and defensive -- even to canines significantly bigger than they.
